Mulligan Motorsports 2008 Preview

One of the most immaculate Pro Mod cars on the legal side of Pro Mod racing is Joe Mulligan’s 68’ Camaro. Built by G-Force Race Cars and powered by a 526 Cu. In. Hemi built by Jan-Cen Racing Engines the Mulligan Motorsports team is eager to get the 2008 season underway.

With limited racing last year the team qualified at 3 of the 5 IHRA races they attended. They also qualified at the AMS Pro Mod Challenge race at Englishtown and were runner up finishers at the Shakedown at E-Town event in October of 2007.  The 2007 season was a huge learning curve for the team. Driver/Owner Joe Mulligan had a great season considering he had never been in a fully suspended car that was also equipped with a clutch. Joe netted personal best’s of 6.23 @ 234 mph. He exclaims, “It was an awesome rush just to be in competition with guys that you have so much respect for. To qualify for more than half the races we attended and have a shot was a great accomplishment for our team this year”.

As the 2008 racing season fast approaches there will be some changes in the Mulligan camp. Crew Chief Jeff LaMantia will take over the driver’s seat as Mulligan himself suffers from a lung ailment and feels the team will be more pertinent with Jeff behind the wheel until he is fit to be in the seat once again. Lamantia states, “Joe has given me the opportunity of a life time and I owe everything to him for it. I licensed at the end of the 2007 season and I’m patiently waiting for testing to get underway in 08.

We have all the right tools in place to be a contender with this car. Each lap down the track everyone on this team builds confidence. I feel we can be a threat anytime we pull to the line”.

Mulligan and LaMantia will be the first to credit Jim Salemi and Mike Janis, as well as their respective companies, as the key to their success. “Mike and Jim have been a great help to us in all regards when it comes to this car. Without both of their expertise and guidance we would not have had the good fortunes we have had to date. They both are stand up individuals and true craftsman of their respected trades”, states Mulligan.

Mulligan Motorsports thanks the gracious help of dedicated crew members Kim McKean and Tom LaMantia, Mike Viglietta, Tony LaMantia and Marion Murray.

The team gives great thanks to the following people and companies: Jan-Cen Racing Engines, G-Force Race Cars Inc, Scott Jahren Paint, Genua and Mulligan Printing Corp. (Minuteman Press, LAS Printing, and Finishline graphics.net) Jersey City.

Two Time IHRA Pro Modified World Champion, Mike Janis, runs the Jan-Cen Motorsports engine shop. Mike along with his assistant Kevin Peters and Mike’s eldest son, Mike Jr. spend endless hours researching and developing new parts and ideas perfecting them for their customers. “Along with myself, both Joe and Matt are running combinations we’ve developed in house at Jan-Cen. Our car serves as a research bed for our customers. We try new things on our car and our in house dyno. When we find something that works we perfect it and pass the performance on to our customers. At this event we’re basically all running the same set up and I think we’ll all do pretty well,” said Janis.  “My guys at Jan-Cen have been working hard to find as much power in our Pro Mod combo as they can. I feel we have one of the most powerful engine programs in the sport and being able to qualify these three cars and set a new track speed record at this event seems proves that,” said Two Time Champ Mike Janis.

Mulligan Motorsports IHRA Spring Nationals Review

Mulligan makes Pro Mod debut

(4-24-2007) MIDLAND PARK, NJ – Joe Mulligan and Jeff Lamantia debuted one of the most eye catching cars that the Pro Modified class has seen in quite some time. A 1968 Cynergy Composites bodied Camaro was the choice for the new Pro Mod team from Midland Park, New Jersey.

Mulligan, a seasoned driver in the Top Dragster class, would had Mike Janis from Jan-Cen Racing Engines build them a BAE Hemi Engine and also provide some initial consulting to the team in the early stages of testing and competition. The team's attention to detail and appearance is high on the list of importance as well as performance.

That led them to Jim Salemi from G-Force Race Cars Inc. Mulligan stated, "I have used Mike Janis for my engine program for the couple of years in my Altered I ran in Top Dragster and he suggested that we talk to G-Force about a new car. It was a perfect fit. The two companies are close to each other and it really worked out well. Jim really builds a beautiful car that works well; it felt like a Cadillac even at 220 mph. His attention to detail is second to none and I commend him for taking pride in his trade and being a true craftsman."

Although the new team did not post any jaw dropping numbers, they made huge strides and worked on having what it takes to be a contender in Pro Mod.

Crew chief Jeff Lamantia said, "We tested at Farmington the day before Rockingham just to get Joe comfortable with a car that has suspension and a clutch. He adapted very well. We did post a .971 60 ft. time during testing, which is promising. We became better as a team on every run down the racetrack. We look forward to the rest of the season and making the progress that we know we are capable of. We really want to thank Jim Salemi from G-Force Race Cars inc., and Mike Janis Sr., as well as Mike Jr.from Jan-Cen Racing Engines. Without these guys, this would still be just a dream."

The Mulligan Motorsports team plans to compete at most of the IHRA National Event races and AMS Pro Mod races throughout the 2007 season.

Joe Mulligan’s Altered Sanity AA/A

Meeting Joe Mulligan at a recent track rental at Atco raceway, He was feverishly working on a repair to bring the car out for some passes during a large crowd filled night at the track. This Altered has been seen many times over at various events and if you're new to this kind of machine it brings you back to the days of true outlaw racers that were the bad boys on four wheels with a blown hemi and short wheelbase, with just a small body of differing makes. This old school style car has gone by the wayside to evolve into the much sleeker versions you see now, Joe Mulligan grew up in Yorktown, NY, and since childhood he was always into drag racing and muscle cars. Joe has been Drag Racing now about 15 years; his need for an adrenalin fix can be traced back to being a Paramedic with the City of New York working in the Bronx and Harlem. Joe now owns a Commercial Printing company in Jersey City, NJ. They print allot of the full color racer handouts seen at the tracks.

Living in Midland Park, NJ. Joe Mulligan’s first race car was a 1968 Camaro which ran 9.50’s. He then stepped up to a 267” Mike Bos Top Dragster and a Blown Big Chief Making about 2000hp stuffed between the rails running 6.40’s @ 216. Joe currently owns the 2002 Mike Bos Blown HEMI Altered called "Altered Sanity" which is his favorite car. Quoting Joe Mulligan "The car is a hell of a ride, that’s how I came up with the name of ALTERED SANITY You definitely are not banging on all 8 to drive a car like this. This ride is just like a funny car but without the clean air, definitely no aerodynamic advantage, it's like having a refrigerator on the nose of a funny car".

About The Altered Sanity Machine: Specs on this car are very straight forward; again you are basically a Funny Car without a full body. Joe straps himself into the 2002 Mike Bos Chassis Craft Altered, this is the second chassis from Mike Bos and his quality workmanship shines throughout. The Jan-Cen 526 TFX Hemi is cradled between the frame where it pushes upwards of 2,500hp on Methanol at this time; Nitromethane is being looked at in the near future. Sucking in huge amounts of air the JBR carbon fiber 4 door hat opens into a Kobelco 14:71 Hi-Helix Supercharger flowing through a Veney Intake and into Veney Heads. The Cam Motion camshaft actuates the Manton pushrods, and the Stage 5 rocker arms to set the Ferrera titanium valves into their flowing motion. Inside the combustion chamber J E Pistons on Brooks 2 aluminum rods take the mixture and pound the power to the Sonny Bryant Crankshaft. The MSD 44 mag. lights NGK plugs and quickly fires the methanol at a rate of 20 to 24 gallons per mile or only 4 to 5 gallons per run. The Waterman 750 Fuel Pump flows all this fuel to the combination at the touch of the FAE Franks Auto Electric starter. The shifting chores are the standard Lenco 3spd from Snyder Motorsports that will withstand the enormous torque transferred through a Coan Mega Converter from Jason at Coan Converters to the custom fabricated 9 1/2 inch 4.29 Pro geared Strange Engineering center section and floating axles with Strange Engineering disc brakes to stop the 16/16 x 34.5 Goodyear’s mounted on Weld Racing Wheels bead locks. Up front the straight front axle has no brakes and is only along for the ride and to steer this beast, this is why these cars remain some of the wildest conceptions in racing. The glowing yellow and multi colored graphics of the panels that were shot by Dave Sano of Sano's Custom Paint in Dayton, NJ. 732-329-1313, and covering the rest of this cars metal is custom powder coating by Acme powder coating. Safety is of prime importance when you have such a volatile mass of power. Jim Mulligan prepares himself to sit inside this car with a full compliment of the best safety equipment from his Impact Nitro Helmet, Simpson fire suit, gloves, boots, and collar. The car itself is protected also by Taylor engine and transmission diapers plus the blower restraints. During the end of a pass the Stroud parachutes and 5 point harness bring this mighty beast to a stop and a comfortable one at that for Jim as all the information is gathered via a Racepak V- 300 Data recorder.

Performance: They started out with the Big Chief motor and got the car screaming into the 6.40’s, towards the end of 2004, Mike Janis the 2 Time PRO MOD World Champion built them a JAN-CEN / TFX Hemi which made over 2500hp on the Dyno. The Hemi was set into the altered this year and after 14 runs have gotten the car approaching 6.0’s @ 225mph. Joe's best friend and Crew Chief Jeff LaMantia, and Mike Janis will look to have the car in the 5 second zone at 235 plus mph within the next 2 to 3 races as of this writing. I've been on the line with this car at full power and judging by fan reaction it's a real crowd pleaser at the hit of the pedal.
